Telxius Extends Submarine Fiber Optic Cable System to Mexico

Telxius stated that it will extend its ultra-high capacity submarine optical cable (Tikal) to Cancun, Mexico. In January 2023, Tikal announced in collaboration with America Movil that it would connect Port Barrios in Guatemala to Boca Raton in the United States. Telxius will independently lead the extension project to Cancun, and the relevant supply contract with Alcatel Subsea Network has come into effect.
The initial capacity of Tikal’s main line after its opening is expected to be 380 Tbps, providing the highest level of service, reliability, and security for a critical line in the Caribbean region. The expected service readiness (RFS) date is mid-2026. Currently, this next-generation fiber optic cable will land in Mexico by extending to Cancun. It can also be further extended to Baranjia in Colombia.

The Telxius network covers over 100000 kilometers of ground and underwater optical fibers, including seven next-generation systems: Marea, Brusa, Dunant, Tannat, Junior, Mistral, and the upcoming Tikal. Five of these systems are located in Latin America, while the other two extend the network to the other side of the Atlantic. The design purpose of the Telxius network is to connect the main digital data centers on both sides of the Atlantic, utilizing a new set of multi megabit next-generation submarine optical cables to fully serve the Americas and Europe, while strengthening Telxius’s traditional lines.
