Romania’s Vodafone Chooses Ericsson for 5G Upgrade

Vodafone Romania has signed a six-year cooperation agreement with Ericsson to modernize its infrastructure and promote 5G deployment as part of a broader strategy to improve networks and support digital initiatives.
According to the agreement, Ericsson will provide its Wireless Access Network (RAN) technology to upgrade Vodafone Romania’s existing network, including the supplier’s wireless system product portfolio and Massive MIMO technology.
The two companies claim that this collaboration “redefines Romania’s connectivity standards” and is part of the operator’s multi-year strategy to support domestic enterprises and social potential.

Nicolae Vilcanou, Chief Network Officer of Vodafone Romania, stated that the collaboration with Ericsson provides a technological foundation for “our efforts to build an independent networking (SA) 5G network.”.
Vodafone Romania will also deploy the supplier’s latest generation of RF and baseband that can reduce network energy consumption to support Romania’s digital and green economic transformation.
The operator piloted 5G in Romania in 2019 and paid 122.5 million euros in the 2022 spectrum auction.
