Semtech’s Latest PON-x Solution Simplifies FTTR Broadband Deployment

Semtech Corporation is a high-performance semiconductor, IoT system, and cloud connectivity service provider. It has announced the availability of its latest PON-X solution. It includes the GN25L81 2.5G combination chip and GN25L42 2.5G burst mode PIN transimpedance amplifier(Super TIA). And they are for in 2.5G PON FTTR optical line terminal(OLT) applications.

As the global demand for reliable high-speed connections continues to soar, FTTR represents the next direction of development for fixed broadband. Only in China, Dell’Oro Group predicts that FTTR users will exceed 80 million by 2026. FTTR-B is aimed at commercial customers. Also, it provides operators with a greater opportunity to promote the digital transformation of their small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) customer base. Fiber optic networks have a lifespan of decades, providing long-term stability for the environment of small and medium-sized enterprises.

“FTTR is rapidly growing in both residential and commercial applications,” said Amit Thakar, Vice President of Marketing at Semtech. “Due to its functionality, FTTR is a game changing technology. However, one of the biggest challenges faced by operators is achieving efficient and cost-effective deployment. Semtech’s 2.5G FTTR solution lays the foundation for the future, easily upgrading to 10G PON without rewiring. This enables operators to protect their valuable network investments.”

“Based on Semtech’s success in low-cost 2.5G PIN ONU Super TIA in the past, we have launched a standard compliant burst mode 2.5G OLT Super TIA for the first time,” said Jacqui Adams, Senior Product Line Manager of Semtech’s Signal Integrity Product Group. “As a result, by replacing avalanche photodiodes in 2.5G FTTR and providing a solution with GN25L81 OLT combination chip, the component and setup costs of FTTR OLT have been greatly down.”

Regarding 2.5G GN25L81 and GN25L42

GN25L42 non reset Super TIA works in conjunction with PIN photodiodes (PD) and proprietary low-noise technology to achieve sensitivity better than -30dBm. It also integrates burst mode RSSI output for easy and low-cost reporting of diagnostic information on receiver input power.

GN25L81 combines a 2.5G laser driver and a burst mode limiting amplifier (combo), enabling the chipset to have optimized and compatible 2.5G burst mode limiting amplifiers and patented dual loop 2.5G laser drivers with eye shaping capabilities, enabling low-cost lasers.

At present, GN25L42 is undergoing sample supply and will be provided in bare chip form. GN25L81 has already been put into production and supplied in QFN packaging form.
