Synergy: U.S. Data Center Capacity will Double in the Next Three Years
Synergy Research Group announced on July 23, 2026, that despite facing multiple obstacles such as power supply and public opinion, its latest data shows the total capacity of U.S. data centers will double within the next three years. Among them, the operational capacity of hyperscale operators’ self-owned data centers will more than double in just two years.
Synergy estimates there are currently nearly 1,500 large-scale data centers under construction worldwide, with almost half located in the United States. This represents approximately 45 gigawatts of new IT capacity to be added in the U.S., driven by 74 different companies expanding their data center footprints. Beyond the confirmed projects in development, numerous long-term plans will ensure sustained robust growth over the next six years and beyond. While the new capacity primarily comes from data centers built by hyperscale operators, colocation providers and enterprises will also contribute to this growth, particularly through data center operators leasing facilities to hyperscale companies and the expansion of neocloud.

Synergy Research Group’s chief analyst John Dinsdale stated, “There is no doubt that power supply constraints and growing local concerns about data centers are stifling many new data center projects. However, it is equally clear that developers will continue to find solutions to these issues, and the booming demand will drive robust capacity growth. Over the next five years, the U.S. will continue to account for more than half of the global operational data center capacity. Seven hyperscale companies are driving this growth by building AI campuses in the U.S., but we also see another 67 companies constructing large data centers or campuses across the country.”
Synergy’s data is derived from a combination of detailed quarterly tracking research services, enabling comprehensive analysis of data center capacity segmented by region, country, and metropolitan area. The hyperscale research is based on an in-depth analysis of the global coverage and operations of major cloud and internet service providers, including large operators in SaaS, IaaS, PaaS, search, social networks, e-commerce, and gaming. The hosting research relies on Synergy’s extensive tracking of the hosting market, incorporating quarterly data from over 320 independent companies. The enterprise on-premises analysis is based on Synergy’s tracking of the data center hardware market.
