Telia Sweden and Ericsson Collaborate on the Road to 6G

Telia President and CEO Patrik Hofbauer and Ericsson President and CEO Per Narvinger met at Ericsson’s studio in Stockholm and pledged to collaborate on the road to 6G, positioning Sweden as a leader in Europe.

Patrick Johansson, Head of Ericsson Europe, Middle East and Africa, and Anders Olsson, Head of Telia Sweden, along with executives from two other companies, attended the event.

With the increasing capabilities of technologies such as artificial intelligence, 5G has become possible, and the path to 6G – as well as the growing demands for capabilities and networks in this era – will be a combination of evolution and innovation based on the success and advantages of 5G.

To commemorate this release, the partners conducted one of the first aerial demonstrations of 6G pre standard technology in the Nordic region, which will be widely applied in the 6G era.

The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding called “Ericsson and Telia Collaborate on 6G in Sweden” to “build on the continued development of 5G, including 5G standalone, 5G advanced, network APIs, and AI based automation”.

During speeches to business, academia, startups, and government stakeholders, the two CEOs stated that under the memorandum of understanding, the two companies will:

Conduct experiments and demonstrations on relevant 6G functions and use cases.

Explore solutions for security, resilience, coverage, performance, and energy efficiency.

Collaborate with ecosystem partners including industry, academia, startups, and public sector stakeholders.

Participate in discussions regarding standards, skills, testing environments, spectrum, and other policy/market conditions.

In relevant situations, collaboration is supported through national testing and innovative environments, including the Swedish Digital Arena.

Anders Olsson, head of Telia Sweden, said: “Our investment in a powerful, secure, and comprehensive 5G network is a natural stepping stone towards the next generation of connectivity: 6G. We are now bringing together industry, academia, and the public sector to ensure that Sweden takes a leading role in the development of 6G based on the needs of society and businesses, and contributes to a safer and more competitive Sweden.”

Patrick Johansson, Head of Ericsson Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: “Sweden and the Nordic region have a proud tradition of being the first to adopt mobile mobility. Today’s statement indicates that our company intends to continue this tradition. We look forward to working closely with Telia on the road to 6G.”

The announced 6G roadmap is based on the long-term cooperation between Ericsson and Telia in the mobile field.
