Ericsson: India Will Lead Global 5G Sustained Growth

Recently, Ericsson released its latest mobile report, “Ericsson Mobility Report,” which shows that despite some markets facing geopolitical challenges and macroeconomic slowdown, global communication service providers are still investing in 5G.
Following the launch of 5G services in October 2022, India’s major 5G market is undergoing large-scale network deployment under its Digital India initiative. As of the end of 2022, India’s 5G users reached approximately 10 million, and it is expected to account for about 57% of the country’s mobile users by the end of 2028, making it the fastest-growing 5G region in the world.

The latest Ericsson Mobile report also shows that the growth momentum of 5G users in North America is stronger than previously predicted. By the end of 2022, the region’s 5G global user penetration rate was the highest, at 41%.
The number of 5G users in every region of the world is increasing, and it is expected to reach 1.5 billion by the end of 2023. Global mobile network data traffic continues to grow, and it is expected that by the end of 2023, the average monthly usage of each smartphone will exceed 20GB.
The report also shows that the revenue of the leading 5G market continues to grow. Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Network Director of Ericsson, stated: The global user base of 5G technology has exceeded 1 billion, bringing positive revenue growth to leading communication service providers in the 5G market. We see a close relationship between the growth of 5G users and service revenue. In the past two years, the launch of 5G services in the top 20 markets has led to a 7% increase in revenue. This trend highlights the growing value of 5G, benefiting both users and service providers
Globally, approximately 240 communication service providers (CSPs) have launched commercial 5G services, and approximately 35 have deployed or launched 5G independent (SA) services. The most common 5G services launched by service providers for consumers are Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), gaming, and some AR/VR based services such as training and education.
The report also shows that 5G will continue to promote the innovation of mobile service packaging. Bundled services offering various popular entertainment services, including television, music streaming, or cloud gaming platforms, are becoming increasingly common among communication service providers. Currently, approximately 58% of 5G service providers provide this service in various forms.

Currently, over 100 CSPs (approximately 40% of FWA service providers) provide 5G FWA. By 2028, 5G is expected to account for nearly 80% of all FWA connections.
