Globe Telecom Sstrengthens 4G LTE and Expands 5G in Philippines
Globe Telecom stated that in addition to building 276 new 4G LTE sites on Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines, the company will also upgrade over 2500 4G LTE sites in 2023 to support the expected growth in demand for digital services in the region as it transitions to a key economic center in the Philippines.
Joel Agustin, Senior Vice President and Head of Network Planning and Engineering at Globe Telecom, stated in a statement, “With the growth of Mindanao’s economy and the government’s commitment to infrastructure, we will continue to optimize our network services to provide backbone for digital journeys in the region.”
Mindanao Island is one of the three main island groups in the Philippine archipelago. According to the latest census, Mindanao Island is home to nearly a quarter of the population of the Philippines, approximately 26.3 million people.
The Philippine government is eager to turn the region into an economic powerhouse, seeking funding for various initiatives such as economic reform, food safety, and infrastructure development. In September this year, the Department of Finance of the Philippines announced that over one-third of its high-impact infrastructure flagship projects (76 out of 194 projects) would be built in the Philippines, with a total value of 2.4 trillion Philippine pesos (42.43 billion US dollars).
Globe Telecom stated that its network expansion in Mindanao is consistent with its comprehensive plan to develop a competitive economy in the region, and reiterated its commitment to help bridge the digital divide on the island.
In 2023, Globe Telecom allocated 91% of its $1.3 billion capital expenditure to ensure that its network is both resilient and prepared for the future. Over the past year, Globe Telecom has significantly increased the capacity of its 4G LTE infrastructure, creating 1217 new sites and upgrading 8226 existing sites.
Expand the coverage of 5G networks
Meanwhile, Globe Telecom stated that as of the end of last year, it had also expanded its 5G footprint across 894 new sites nationwide, achieving 97.9% outdoor coverage in the national capital region and 92.36% outdoor coverage in major cities in the Visayas and Mindanao islands.
Globe Telecom stated that considering the current market conditions and seeking feasible use cases to fully utilize the potential of 5G technology, it has strategically reduced expenses on new 5G sites.
Globe Telecom stated, “This approach reflects the company’s commitment not only to advancing technology, but also to ensuring its sustainability and strategic deployment.”
Last December, Globe Telecom had over 5.8 million 5G users.
Globe Telecom ensures that these users can connect to 5G overseas by expanding its roaming partnership to include 156 Globe Telecom partners in 82 countries.
It has recently expanded its roaming business in Africa, increasing Nigeria through cooperation with MTN, Mauritius through Cellplus, and expected cooperation with Kenya through Africell.
In Asia, Globe Telecom has also expanded its business scope to Kazakhstan and Laos by collaborating with Tele2 and LaoTel respectively.
Globe Telecom has also established 5G roaming partnerships with Emnify and E-Plus Mobilfunk, China Unicom Hong Kong, LG u+from South Korea, Cellcom and YTL from Malaysia, Mobile Norway, Tele2 and COM4 from Sweden, and DTAC from Thailand in Germany.
