IAM: Huawei Ranked First with 8440 Patent Applications in China in 2022
According to international authoritative intellectual property media (IAM), although the number of applications has decreased in the past two years, Huawei has still ranked first in patent applications in China for five consecutive years.
Data shows that in 2022, Huawei submitted 8440 applications, ranking first, followed closely by State Grid with 8385 applications. In the past five years, the number of applications from both companies has shown a downward trend, and there has been a significant decrease in 2022. Gree, BOE, and OPPO rank 3-5 respectively.

According to the classification of patent application fields, Huawei has applied for a number of patents related to electronic communication. Between 2018 and 2022, Huawei submitted 56637 related applications, accounting for more than 54% of its total applications. The most active fields of State Grid are motors, instruments, and energy, with a total of 24375 patents applied, accounting for 37% of the total patent application volume.
According to foreign media reports, Steven Geiszler, Huawei’s Chief Intellectual Property Advisor in the United States, stated that in the three years ending in 2021, Huawei has earned approximately $1.2 billion in revenue from global patent licenses, or approximately $hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Foreign media pointed out that in the past two years, Huawei has become more proactive in achieving patent transactions.
