Intel Will Receive Funding to Promote Advanced Chip Production
Bloomberg reported that the US government is preparing to invest $3.5 billion (currently approximately RMB 25.2 billion) in Intel to produce advanced semiconductor chips for the US defense sector.
It is reported that this funding has been included in a spending bill passed by the House of Representatives on March 6th, which will be used for the “secure enclave” program for three years. The funding comes from the Chip and Science Act funding project, which aims to persuade chip manufacturers to produce semiconductor products in the United States. Currently, more than 600 companies have expressed interest in this funding.
Last month, it was reported that the US government was in talks to provide Intel with subsidies of over $10 billion (currently approximately RMB 72 billion), and it seems that the results have just been reached.
This will be the largest investment in the US government’s plan to guide semiconductor manufacturing back to the US. Bloomberg stated that subsidies for Intel may include loans and direct grants.
The US Department of Commerce, responsible for overseeing the payment of funds under the Chip and Science Act, has previously announced two smaller grants. The US Secretary of Commerce stated that it plans to make several appropriations within two months from the government’s $39 billion funding to promote semiconductor manufacturing.
Since the current US President took office, major chip companies have invested over 230 billion US dollars (currently around 1.66 trillion yuan) in the United States, and the US government’s goal is to establish at least two leading manufacturing clusters by 2030.
