Nokia and STC Use AI Based MantaRay Cognitive SON Solution to Optimize Networks

Nokia announced that it has successfully deployed the artificial intelligence self-organizing network solution MantaRay Cognitive SON in STC Group’s commercial network for the first time. MantaRay SON is an industry-leading network optimization and automation platform that uses self configuring modules to improve network performance and efficiency. It can be customized and deployed to optimize specific software applications and address unique operational challenges. Cognitive SON is an artificial intelligence software feature of MantaRay SON that enables automatic RAN operations. Nokia has created a customized solution for STC.

Cognitive SON was implemented during high traffic periods, during which it processed over 10000 operations, resulting in an approximately 30% increase in load unit utilization and an average 10% increase in user throughput. Despite a 40% increase in traffic during this period, STC’s network successfully maintained consistent connectivity. Autonomous RAN operations also reduce manual operations and improve network quality.

The development of artificial intelligence network modules extends STC’s advanced AI solution suite. It provides a wide range of artificial intelligence driving functions that help accelerate digital transformation and achieve sustainable growth, including improving wireless network energy efficiency, thereby reducing the energy consumption of STC’s 4G and 5G networks by 13% in 2023. By 2025, STC’s artificial intelligence products will cover over 200 systems, further improving cost-effectiveness.

Saintem Al Faraj, Chief Technology Officer of STC Group, said, “STC and Nokia are ushering in a new era where artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the telecommunications industry. This technology not only minimizes human errors and improves quality, but also enables networks to operate autonomously and efficiently, and humans remain crucial in guiding and maximizing machine learning outcomes.”

Nokia MEA Director Mikko Lavanti commented, “Through collaboration with STC Group, Nokia is changing the optimization of wireless networks through the integration of artificial intelligence. Our MantaRay Cognitive SON solution is equipped with complex artificial intelligence algorithms, representing a huge leap in autonomous network operations. This is the first time STC Group has deployed this solution globally. This AI driven innovation redefines network performance standards, ensuring strong and consistent services for customers even during peak usage periods. Together with STC, we will continue to explore new use cases of Cognitive SON to further improve efficiency.”
