Nokia Launches Aurelis Solution for Data Centers

Nokia announced the expansion of its Out of Band Management (OOBM) product portfolio and the launch of the Aurelis solution for data centers. This PON fiber optic solution designed specifically for data centers provides AI and cloud service providers with a simple and effective way to establish critical OOBM capabilities. This solution reduces the number of active switches by 90%. Also, it improves space efficiency, achieves 50% or higher power savings, and simplifies operational workload by 80%.

The traditional OOBM architecture relies on dedicated switches for each rack. And this adds unnecessary complexity while increasing power consumption and cooling requirements. As the scale of data centers expands, it becomes crucial to find new ways to simplify operations and reduce costs.

Nokia’s Aurelis solution for data centers offers a simpler, more efficient, and cost-effective OOBM architecture. This PON optical switch with six 9s availability can connect and manage thousands of endpoints from a single platform. So it significantly reduces the number of required switches and power consumption. This solution supports zero contact configuration, is easy to install. And it is equipped with a plug and play optical modem that can be remotely managed. AI enabled proactive troubleshooting and automated operations also reduce manual workload and minimize on-site access requirements.

Geert Heyninck, General Manager of Nokia Broadband Networks, said, “With no signs of slowing down AI demand, data centers are seeking to utilize PON technology to save costs and space. PON is designed specifically for efficiency and reliability. So it’s the perfect technology for out of band management in data centers. Aurelis has been deployed in over 700 mission critical enterprise networks. This makes it ideal for helping data centers become more resilient and efficient.”

650 Group analyst and co-founder Chris DePuy said, “As data centers scale to support cloud and AI workloads, operational complexity and risk are increasing. PON based OOBM reflects a broader shift in the industry towards simpler and more environmentally friendly fiber optic architectures. For data centers, PON’s point to multipoint architecture brings significant space, power consumption, and cost savings.”

The Nokia Aurelis solution includes:

Aurelis MF-2 Optical Switch (OLT): a central switch that connects thousands of devices using a point to multipoint architecture.

Aurelis optical modem (ONT): a stateless device used to terminate fiber optic cables and convert signals to Ethernet ports. ONT can be remotely managed and is usually installed at the top of the rack to save space.

Aurelis Command Center (CC): a mature management solution with intent based capabilities to simplify operations, designed to interface with data center controllers and automation systems.
