Openreach Chooses Nokia to Build Open Access Fiber Optic Network

Advantages

Nokia announced to be been selected by Openreach to build the One Network Platform. And it is an open access fiber optic network that serves millions of households and businesses. The network will use Nokia’s Altiplano and NSP network domain controllers to help Openreach connect from its current 17 million households to 25 million households by the end of 2026, meeting the growing demand for high-speed broadband across the UK.
Openreach’s open wholesale broadband network connects users to approximately 300 communication service providers, providing ultra fast all fiber services to city centers, towns, villages, and smaller rural communities in some of the most difficult to reach areas of the UK. Supported by Nokia technology, the Openreach One network platform provides the flexibility, agility, and scale needed to meet these market demands, while reducing the number of exchange buildings required for nationwide coverage.

Nokia’s solution is modeled after a modular data center architecture approach, enabling Openreach to establish a large-scale multi service open access network that can help reduce power and space requirements for Ethernet access switching sites by over 50%. This architecture supports various deployment models tailored to different population densities, ensuring that communication providers can easily connect end-users to Openreach fiber optic networks.
With Nokia’s Altiplano and NSP network domain controllers, Openreach will be able to automate fiber connectivity services for point-to-point, GPON, and XGS PON technologies through simple intent based management. This will greatly simplify operations through a universal service-oriented interface and reduce the OSS complexity of the entire network by 85%. In addition, the solution also provides stream telemetry technology to provide detailed insights into network behavior and performance.

Remarks

Openreach Network Technology Director Trevor Linney said, “This is the next step in our plan to build a future oriented, multi service, one network platform that supports both full FTTP and future Ethernet products. The introduction of Nokia’s Altiplano and NSP network domain controllers, as well as 7250 IXR data center routers, will improve automation, network visibility and control, and product flexibility for our communication provider customers and their end-user customers. Ultimately, this is to make our network easier to manage, more efficient, and more reliable, for example, by identifying faults faster through automation and helping to reduce operating costs.”
Geert Heyninck, General Manager of Nokia Broadband Networks, said, “Open access networks are the future of broadband, and we are proud to support Openreach in bringing fiber connectivity to millions of people in the UK. Meeting the growing demand for broadband requires scalability and flexibility, which is where our intention based design solutions truly come into play. We are glad to help Openreach achieve operational automation, optimize resources, and create a powerful, future oriented network that serves urban and rural communities.”
