VIAVI Joins EU SHIELD-6G to Promote AI Security Testing
VIAVI Solutions Inc. announced on July 14, 2026, that it has received $1.1 million in funding from the European Union Smart Networks and Services Consortium and Horizon Europe to advance the SHIELD-6G project.
With the increasing number of telecommunications network intrusion incidents, the threat of quantum network attacks has also moved from theory to reality, and network security has become a strategic priority for global operators, enterprises, and governments. The SHIELD-6G project aims to develop a comprehensive AI driven Network Threat Intelligence platform for 6G networks, with interoperable security, orchestration, and compliance management capabilities. VIAVI will utilize its TeraVM AI RAN Scene Generator (RSG) technology to develop digital twins, enabling AI driven security models to be developed, tested, and validated before the first commercial 6G signal goes live.

As part of the SHIELD-6G project, VIAVI will use its AI RSG technology to support advanced security testing in 6G network environments, utilizing AI simulation, detection, and analysis of potential threats in the network. This includes generating real network datasets, implementing intelligent anomaly detection, and continuously optimizing AI based security mechanisms to ensure vulnerabilities are identified and fixed before they are exploited in real-time networks.
Ian Langley, Senior Vice President of VIAVI’s Wireless, Security, and Applications Business Unit, stated that the security of 6G networks must be built into the system from day one, which requires the ability to simulate, test, and detect threats before the first commercial 6G signal goes live. Our AI RSG technology has been used to provide the necessary digital twin foundation for better understanding 6G propagation characteristics, improving energy consumption, and reducing FR3 signal interference. The SHIELD-6G project extends this capability directly to the security field, where the risks are higher. We are delighted to participate in this latest collaboration at the forefront of global technological innovation.”
SHIELD-6G is part of the Horizon Europe SNS JU Accelerated European 6G Research and Innovation Competitive Program, which has selected a total of 20 new 6G projects. VIAVI has joined a European Union coordinated by University College Dublin, partnering with global industry leaders such as Ericsson, Nokia, THALES&THALES SIX, as well as network operators such as Telef ó nica and LMT in Latvia, to gather the complete professional chain required to ensure end-to-end security of 6G networks.
