Xi’an Samsung Factory Starts Process Upgrade
South Korean companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have obtained indefinite exemptions from the US government, and their Chinese factories do not require special permits to import US chip equipment.
This is undoubtedly good news for Samsung, and they are indeed taking corresponding measures after obtaining exemptions. According to Business Korea, Samsung Electronics executives have decided to upgrade their Xi’an NAND flash memory factory to the 236 layer NAND process and have begun large-scale expansion.
According to sources, Samsung has started purchasing the latest semiconductor equipment, which is expected to be delivered by the end of 2023. In 2024, Samsung will gradually introduce equipment capable of producing the 8th generation NAND at its Xi’an factory, which is also seen by the industry as a strategic step to overcome the decline in production capacity caused by weak global NAND demand.
According to public information, Samsung (China) Semiconductor Co., Ltd. settled in Xi’an High tech Zone in 2012, and Samsung Semiconductor’s Xi’an factory is the company’s only overseas memory semiconductor production base.
The factory added the second phase of the factory project in 2020 and has now developed into the world’s largest NAND manufacturing base, capable of producing 200000 12 inch wafers per month, accounting for over 40% of Samsung NAND’s total production.
The first factory of Samsung Xi’an invested 10.87 billion US dollars, and the second factory, which started construction in 2017, invested 15 billion US dollars successively.
