Yang Jie: Accelerate Application of 5G Ground to Air Communication Technology in Aviation Internet

5G ground to air communication technology (5G-ATG) is of great significance to meet the people’s needs for better air travel, create a new driving force for the development of aviation Internet, and help the country open up at a high level. During the National Two Sessions in 2024, Yang Jie, member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and chairman of China Mobile, brought a proposal on accelerating the application of 5G ground to air communication technology in aviation Internet.
Yang Jie mentioned that China is the second largest civil aviation market in the world, with an annual passenger transportation volume of 620 million and an average flight time of about 2.5 hours per passenger. Research shows that about 98% of passengers have a strong need for air connectivity. At the same time, China’s aviation Internet penetration rate is only about 6%, which is significantly lower than the level of more than 50% in major developed countries. Facing the new situation, it is of great significance to strengthen the integration and innovation of new generation information technologies such as 5G with the aviation service industry.

Yang Jie puts forward three suggestions for this. Firstly, we attach great importance to the potential application of 5G ground to air communication technology. Compared with airborne satellite communication, 5G-ATG technology has many advantages, including relatively better key performance, lower construction and operation costs, and stronger autonomous and controllable capabilities.
Secondly, strengthen top-level design, increase overall planning efforts, and accelerate the commercial process of 5G ground to air communication technology. This includes issuing special plans and action plans, establishing cross departmental promotion work groups, expanding the scope of technical testing and verification, etc.
Furthermore, we will strengthen the application and innovation of 5G ground to air communication technology and foster new driving forces for the development of the aviation Internet industry.
